The MODEL 3 interior
development
From interior concept sketch, virtual reality phase and full size clay model the design was developed under tight time pressure for the Model 3 event. Three Alpha prototype reveal cars were first displayed to the public on March 31st 2016.

Inspiration
Drawing inspiration from aviation transitions, aerodynamic theories and pure form ideals the design was driven through first principles thinking and a considered industrial design approach.
Innovation was the key driver for the architecture. 'Thin air' = Thin Instrument panel.

'Space is a Premium' - Architecture
The Instrument Panel was moved forward in car to accommodate the forward positioning of the 1st row occupants - Driven by Elon Musk the 2nd Row was to be best in class for foot room and space.
The floating interface and UI experience was developed to be the Jewel of the interior design. The floating screen was a solution driven by the 'forward-in-car' push of the Instrument Panel and constrained percentile ergonomic reach profiles. The horizontal screen architecture was developed for social interaction over driver orientation, and future Autonomy.
